Why an ERT Vision?

Global megatrends are rapidly changing the world. Even before the crisis, the EU faced unfavourable underlying trends affecting its future place in the world economy. The crisis has made the challenges even greater. The EU economy’s continued ability to provide quality employment is under threat. Europe needs to transform itself to keep pace with global developments. Ambitious policies are urgently required to address future trends and challenges. We now have an opportunity to rethink the EU’s future course and to take decisive action while we are still in a position to build on our strengths.

Our vision is intended to help guide the EU’s policy choices in the next decade. To support this process, we make recommendations for policy actions that would set the EU on the desired long term course. Our vision is not a prediction of the future. Bold policy thinking and tough choices are essential to attain it. We are confident that Europeans can work together towards this goal. But the experience with the EU’s Lisbon Agenda teaches us that even the best intentions will not necessarily drive the required change.paragraph text
