One Year On: ERT says Europe needs faster transformation to remain a leading global economy
31 January 2011
Europe’s economic future crucially depends on short-term action to return to sustainable public finances. But this must not detract from the immediate need for important long-lasting measures to take account of rapid changes in the rest of the world – faster transformation is necessary.
One year after launching ERT’s Vision for a competitive Europe in 2025, the group of Chairmen and Chief Executives says that more decisive policy changes are required. In its Vision, the European Round Table of Industrialists (ERT) had outlined recommendations for policy action to ensure a successful economic future for Europe. So far, insufficient progress has been made towards this goal. This is the result of a progress assessment ERT published today. Based on its progress assessment, ERT has developed its policy priorities for 2011: unleash the EU’s innovative power, improve business certainty, and develop a coherent EU policy strategy across all policy areas.

“Employability & Flexibility”
9 December 2010
In order to increase economic growth, employment and the competitiveness of the European Union ERT supports the EU flagship initiative for “An agenda for new skills and jobs” launched with the Europe 2020 agenda. In times of rapid global economic and technological changes European labour productivity needs to be increased and companies need to be able to adapt their workforce and have access to the right talent and skills. With this in mind, ERT has produced a leaflet on Employability & Flexibility. This document outlines ERT recommendations for bold and swift actions from European as well as national policy-makers and social partners, which are necessary in the following policy areas in order to increase both economic and employment growth in the European labour market.

"Energy & Climate Change Report: Developing a sustainable energy economy for Europe, tackling climate change and maintaining competitiveness"
15 November 2010
The European Union continues to face global and domestic energy and climate change challenges, ranging from finding its role in the ongoing international climate negotiations, to developing a secure, competitive and domestic low carbon economy for the future. ERT is sensitive to these challenges and remains committed to the energy and climate change debate, putting forward the perspective of CEOs and Chairmen of some of the world’s leading multinational industrial companies.
ERT has developed a set of position papers and thought pieces to support our continued engagement in the evolving policy process. These papers address developments in both domestic and international climate policy, which have short and long term impacts on industry. This report is a compilation of these position papers.

"The next EU Framework Programme for Research must reinforce the EU's innovation capacity - ERT's suggestions for FP8"
2 November 2010
ERT’s Vision underlines that an innovation-driven Single Market is the key to ensuring that Europe remains globally competitive and an attractive place to live and work for its citizens. Building on the ERT Vision, this publication makes detailed recommendations on the improvements needed to ensure world-class research and innovation performance in the EU.
The key policy challenge in this area is to improve the EU’s capacity to turn research into innovation. As an important part of the EU’s innovation policy, the next Framework Programme must make an important contribution to the reinforcement of the EU’s innovation potential.
Companies play an important role in this regard. It is worrying, therefore, that the share of company participation in the successive Framework Programmes has continued to decline. This situation must be urgently redressed to reinforce the EU’s innovative capacity.

"Benchmarking progress towards a competitive Europe – Monitoring achievement of ERT’s Vision"
29 October 2010
To supplement our Vision and policy recommendations with an appreciation of economic reality, we have compiled a set of indicators to gain a better overview of the bigger picture.
We have identified indicators that can help to gain an appreciation of the current situation in Europe and, where possible, in other important economies. We have abstained from interpreting the data in detail. We want to let the figures speak for themselves.
We hope that this publication gives decision-makers the tools they need to deliver the measures that are necessary to achieve the ERT Vision for a competitive Europe in 2025.

"Co-Creating a Sustainable Energy Economy: ERT Companies Take the Lead"
26 October 2010
The primary objective of this report is to demonstrate, through a series of examples, how ERT Member companies are taking a lead in building the foundations for a sustainable energy economy for 2020 and beyond. The sustainable energy economy will be one where industry co-creates in a competitive way an energy efficient, low carbon society with governments and consumers. The co-creation of the economy is expected to be formed of many small step changes that will combine to impact on the way that we live at home, the way we as individuals work in the offices of 2020 and beyond and the way in which we use transport. Co-creating this competitive new economy requires the support of industry, government and consumers. Collectively it will be possible to strongly impact specific aspects of the economy, including those highlighted in this report; manufacturing and distribution, construction, smart and sustainable living, mobility and transportation and delivering energy.
